Annodex.net: Codec Recommendations

Open standards for annotating and indexing networked media

Much as the W3C recommends the royalty and patent free image compression formats PNG and JPEG, Annodex.net recommends the use of royalty and patent free audio and video codecs.

Xiph.org is producing an extensive range of high quality free codecs which excellently meet the technical challenges imposed by network-wide scalablility. These work particularly well with the Annodex format as it uses Xiph.org's Ogg encapsulation format, for which these have been designed:

Vorbis

Ogg Vorbis is a completely open, patent-free, professional audio encoding and streaming technology with all the benefits of Open Source.

Speex

Speex is an Open Source/Free Software patent-free audio compression format designed for speech. Speex is well-adapted to Internet applications and provides useful features that are not present in most other codecs.

We also recommend: libfishsound, which provides a simple API to Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Speex.

Theora

Theora is a high-quality video codec in development by Xiph.Org, based on the donation of the VP3 codec by On2 technologies Inc.

Given the immediate need for a reliable, cross-platform video codec, we recommend the use of MPEG 1 video content only in the interim until the Theora video codec has matured.
